Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance
by Barack Obama
Hardcover: 464 pages
Publisher: Crown (January 9, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0307383415
ISBN-13: 978-0307383419

Comments: To my surprise, I enjoyed this book. Barack gives great detail of his life in Hawaii, Indonesia, Chicago and his trip “home” to Kenya. It’s sad that his father moved so far away when he was a boy; his mother remarried to an Indonesian man who treated him like his own son. He had many struggles in his young life, which I think, has made him a strong leader. It seems to me, his religious beliefs are more in humanism with a lean toward Islam (both his father and his step father were Islamic, although in his next book he says that he choose Christianity as his religion). His political goals seem idealistic to me. I think I would like him as a neighbor if he lived next door, but I don’t think I could vote for him as president.

The Problem of Pain

The Problem of Pain
Author: C. S. Lewis
Paperback: 176 pages
Publisher: HarperOne; New Ed edition (February 6, 2001)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0060652969
ISBN-13: 978-0060652968

Comments: An intellectual work by Lewis where he looks at pain and suffering and tries to reason how and why God allows it in the world. It can be difficult to follow at times. The book even deals with pain in animals. My guess is he had a love for domesticated animals in his life; as many of us do. One point that bothered me in the book was that Lewis seems to believe in an Old-Earth; that is death before the fall. However, in his apology he does state that he may be in error in some areas of understanding. C.S. Lewis was certainly one of the great philosophers and thinkers of our time.

Comments: What is the plan of the enemy of our souls? Lewis takes a functional look at this issues by showing how sin can enter our lives, through our actions encouraged by the devious schemes of the evil spirits in this world. This was quite insightful for me, I think you too would enjoy this book.

A Perfect Union is a sympathetic biography of Dolley Madison. Well written with deep research gives the reader an excellent perspective of Mrs. Madison, her life of hardships and blessings. Her dedication to her first husband, Mr. Todd Page and her second husband Mr. James Madison. Dolley was a women ahead of her time, or at lease allowed to behave as such within her time. The drawing room gathering, set the framework for politicing in the United States of America. Her ability to make each person feel important, from the lowly carriage man to the political giants, gave her the pathway to the hearts of the Americans. Everyone loved Mrs. Madison.
